PQ Sea Designs doesn’t know email marketing…

Posted by Joseph Szala on March 4th, 2009 // No Comments »

This morning brought forward a laughable situation I just had to write about. It involved an invitation to a mixer by a Harrisburg web design firm that was revoked when they discovered Vigor was a competitor. The outcome is hysterical.

I have been receiving email invites to a mixer by a, shall we call them PQ Sea Designs, for a couple of years now. I never went. Every time I received one I thought to myself, “This company is pretty steadfast and secure in their abilities to be inviting a competitor to their mixers.”

Finally, this month I receive the invite again. This time I felt it was a great opportunity to network for Blabberbug, my new coupon word of mouth marketing site. So, i read the email, went to the PQ Sea Designs website and registered earlier this morning. About 30 minutes after registration, my phone rings…

“Ughh, yeah, we just received your registration and we regret to inform you that the industry you entered has already been filled. Also, it seems you are a competitor and therefore it’s a conflict of interest to have you at the mixer.”

Vigor: “You invited me. Don’t you supply email marketing to your clients?”

PQSea: “Yes we do, we just…”

Vigor: “Your not very good at it are you? Besides, I am not attending for Vigor. I am attending for Blabberbug, a coupon marketing website.”

PQSea: “We already have a marketing company form York area coming to the mixer. I can tell Mr. Owner and maybe get you on the next mixer.”

Vigor: “But we’re not a marketing a company. No one is doing what we’re doing so i doubt the industry is taken already.”

PQSea: “It’s not going to be possible. We can send you another invite next month and you can try again.”

Vigor: “Why would you continue to invite your competitors when you won’t let them come. Seems like you should probably take my name off your list. Doesn’t that make sense?”

PQSea: “I will definitely do that.”

So, what have we learned?

1. Making sure you know who is on your email  marketing list is important. Super important.

2. Not knowing who is on your list makes you look like an idiot.

I will try again next month and see what happens. :)
